Plant Genetic Transformation Department at AGERI consists of five differentlaboratories.

It mainly focus on tissue culture50 and transformation techniques as a tool for studying essential genes and enhancing vital traits in Egyptian important crops such as: potato, tomato, strawberry, wheat, sugarcane, sugar beet, stevia, cucurbits crops, oil plants and some ornamental plants.

New cultivars of potato resistant to virus infection were developed and resistant to lepidopteron insects as well. Genes responsible for abiotic stresses tolerance were studied in number of oil plants. Defense gene (s) in melon; watermelon and strawberry via artificial elicitor addition was studied. Works in wheat grains to increase the protein contents for enhancing the bread quality. Furthermore, working for developed a novel color in gerbera flowers through insertion of color responsible gene(s) is running.
