Prof. Dr. Shireen Assem
Shireen K. Assem is the Director of the Agricultural Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology Research Institute (AGERI), Agricultural Research Center (ARC). Prior to that she was the Deputy Director for Training and Extension at AGERI from 2010 to 2014. She was the Head of Plant Molecular Biology Department at AGERI from 2007 to 2010. Dr. Assem holds doctorates in Biochemistry from Cairo University, Egypt. In 2002 she was awarded a Fulbright scholarship at the USA.
Dr. Assem has international collaboration with several institutions. She participated in several basic and applied research projects as Principal Investigator. Her main interest is the development of new plant varieties for Egypt and other developing countries tolerant to different environmental stresses to cope with the climatic changes and satisfy human needs with population growth. Moreover, she is interested in using plant as a biological bioreactor for the production of cheap and reliable biopharmaceuticals.
In the last ten years her research is focused on the improvement of maize and sorghum crops for salinity and drought stress tolerance. She has several publications in national and international peer reviewed journals.
